TLC compassionate community

TLC stands for Tender Loving Care.

This award-winning programme of care for the dying has been developed as a practical-based offshoot of Soul Midwifery

TLC was specially designed by Felicity Warner, Founder of the Soul Midwives' Movement, to offer extra tools in the “caring toolbox” to anyone who is caring for people who are dying.  It is aimed at enhancing existing caring skills and empowering people to extend their compassionate care in a practical, holistic way.

The training encourages people to reconnect with their ancient wisdom, to rekindle traditional skills and an innate sense of community, friendship, kindness and compassion for the dying; within modern clinical settings as well as home environments.

More about TLC

The course takes place over one day, to small groups (10 maximum.)
It is very much an interactive, hands-on day, with a mixture of
presentation, discussion, sharing ideas and practical group work.

Handouts and certificates of attendance are included.

TLC training is equally suitable for complementary therapists, counsellors, nurses. carers, interfaith ministers or for anyone who is interested in finding out how to support someone who is approaching end of life.

The feedback received so far has been universally positive, both professionally and on a personal level.  The gentle, loving, simple TLC skills can be applied in any context – hospices, care homes, hospitals, the prison service, schools, workshops, within palliative services and in the home. They will empower and inspire an expanding compassionate community to sit with, listen to, and support people who are dying; and make a difference.
The TLC sessions provided by our soul midwife have been invaluable in supporting our staff to think more broadly about what is important at the end of someone’s life. It has helped to encourage the more traditional view of using medicine to cope at end of life and our ethos is certainly more non medicinal following our TLC sessions.

I feel that our staff feel more confident when supporting someone at the end of their life as the approach is less clinical and more individualised. The staff have all thoroughly enjoyed the TLC sessions and we look forward to extending our partnership with the soul midwifery group in the future

Michaela Russell, Unit Manager of Bluebirds Neurological Care Centre, Faraday Drive, Milton Keynes

TLC works effectively alongside clinical excellence – there is no conflict with the medical profession.

In fact nurses, HCAs and hospice/hosptial bedside volunteers have reported that the practical, holistic skills they learn on this workshop have helped them feel like they are able to offer even more compassionate care.  They also report feeling better-equipped to support their patients' family members, by helping them to understand the holistic stages of dying and adapt their support accordingly.
